December 4 Advent Devotional

December 4, 2020

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.” Psalm 130:5-6

My soul waits. It seems that all we are doing now is waiting. Waiting on the election, waiting on the inauguration, waiting on a vaccine for Covid-19, waiting on test results, waiting on church to reopen, waiting on schools to reopen… waiting. But through his word, I hope. We have much to hope for, not getting sick, a vaccine, and now Christmas. The kids and I have been listening to Christmas music since way before Thanksgiving. I bought inflatables to decorate the yard for the first time ever. Christmas decorations are up before December 1st. Hope.

The birth of Jesus is what we celebrate at Christmas and his being born gives us hope in the future. It is what has kept me going through these long months of semi-isolation and not being able to do what we for so long have considered “normal”. The tears, the frustration, the missed celebrations all have brought heartache. But Jesus’ birthday is a day to celebrate and look forward to. Not just wait for like we have done since March. I am excited to have something to look forward to and am treasuring this time and more than ever grateful for all the merriment Christmas brings.

Heavenly father, we are thankful that as we wait on so many things, we can look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus. We are thankful that he died for our sins and that you are a forgiving and loving God. Bless us as we walk through this time before Christmas and prepare our hearts and minds for your greatest blessing. Amen.
