8/29/22 Devotional from Ed
Text: John 8:31
31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
Devotional
I visited with one of our Forest Lake family members this morning. Initially I didn’t pay too much attention to the TV on in the background, but when I looked up at it during a pause in our conversation, I saw a bunch of mayonnaise.
I must have made a facial expression, prompting her to want to know what I saw. We then became engrossed in this show for the next 10 minutes.
TLC’s “Freaky Eaters” fits its title. In this particular episode, an interventionist has been called in to help a woman with her addiction to tartar sauce. She ate 10 bottles weekly! I’m not the biggest fan of anything that has mayonnaise as its base ingredient, so this one messed with me a bit.
However, it made me think…
What if we spend ten minutes each day reading Scripture? What if we spend ten minutes each day reading devotionals? What if we spend ten minutes throughout the day just to pray?
And maybe you’re like me – you can be addicted to your phone. You like to surf your phone just to “see what’s going on, you prefer the easiness of texting instead of a phone call to a friend. What if we put our phones down for ten minutes?
What are our addictions? And is one of them to following in the footsteps of Jesus? With so many outside distractions, it’s easy to get off track, but now that we’re starting a new academic year, we have a fresh chance to get pointed in the back direction.
Prayer
Holy God, may your Spirit find its ways into our hearts and minds to help us loosen our addictions to anything keeping us from following in your footsteps. Amen.
