Financial Peace University Returns
New Class to Start in February
Financial Peace University (FPU) consists of a 13-week video curriculum, taught by financial expert Dave Ramsey, that incorporates small-group discussions to encourage accountability and discipleship. Financial Peace University is highly entertaining for everyone, with a unique combination of humor, informative financial advice and biblical messages. More than one million families have already had their lives changed by attending FPU. Some FLPC families have children in FLY who are now taking the equivalent course for teens - "Generation Change." Let's all get on the road to freedom from debt and financial peace. On average, families reduce their debt by $5,300 and save $2,700 in just 91 days. That's an $8,000 turnaround!
A class will begin at 6:30pm on Thursday, February 25, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. For thirteen weeks with a break for Holy Week, the class will be coordinated by FLPC members, David and Jennifer Feltwell. In the first FLPC class last Fall, families saved a total of $15,000, eliminated $10,000 in debt and avoided over $50,000 in new debt. If you would like to preview the class please contact David at (803) 873-2452, at dfeltwell@yahoo.com or online at http://www.daveramsey.com/church/home/. There is a $93 fee for the class which includes course materials and access to the FPU member website. The membership is for life and allows members to return again to any future class at any time.
Kid's Garden Happenings
A new season of growing is upon us for the Kid's Garden at Forest Lake and your help is needed. More signs are needed for the summer plantings: potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, onions, okra, peppers, squash, and zucchini. The signs can be drawn on any size white paper using crayon, pen, paint, or any medium. Please put your first name and age on the drawings. Everyone is invited to help us label the garden.
On Sunday, February 28, the 4th and 5th grade class will have the opportunity to get the Potato Bin started. Karen Webster will meet with the students to give information about growing potatoes and the harvesting method (which is akin to an Easter Egg Hunt!) The class will then have an opportunity to plant the seed potatoes.
More exciting events are planned for the garden as some expansions are being made. Come sit awhile and enjoy the view of the harvest. Vegetables picked from the Kid's Garden are taken to Harvest Hope.
Recycle Your Old Phone Books!
Little things can make a big difference in
stewardship of God's Creation.
Recycling old phone books saves a surprising amount of energy, natural resources, and landfill space.
Since phone books are not picked up curbside for recycling, Keep the Midlands Beautiful will collect your old phone books at several recycling drop off cites from February 1 through March 14. The closest sites in our area are:
*Forest Acres Recycling Center -- 3724 Covenant Rd
*Clemson Rd Education Center -- Clemson Rd across from Village at Sandhill
*Fort Jackson Recycling Center -- Building #6568 on Lee Rd, off Imboden Rd., Forest Dr. entrance
For your convenience and to conserve energy the FLPC Environmental Stewardship Green Team will collect your old phone books in the Welcome Center from February 1 to March 14. and take them to the drop off sites. For further recycling information visit www.keepthemidlandsbeautiful.com or call 733-1139.
Dimes for Hunger
FLPC is following in the footsteps of our own Phyllis Melvin and asking you to donate your loose change to Harvest Hope Food Bank. Piggy banks have been placed in the Sunday School classes and there are collection jars in the Welcome Center and in the Sanctuary lobby. Please donate your dimes through March 28 to fight hunger!
Houma, LA, Mission Trip
Forest Lake is once again participating in a relief mission trip to Houma, LA. Thankfully the Pearlington, MS., Camp, which serviced Katrina victims, has been closed because the work there is almost complete. The Houma area, however, was hit again by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, the third worst storm in U.S. history. We will be leaving April 25 and returning the following Saturday. No construction skills are required. Saxe Gotha and Northminster members will be going with us again. The opportunity to go and spend time with our Presbyterian brothers and sisters is especially meaningful, and we hope you will take advantage of this trip and join us. For information call Cindy Welborn at 530-8084 or Tommy Stallings at 331-8062.
Forest Lake Presbyterian Church Golf Group
Both men and ladies are invited to participate in the Forest Lake Presbyterian Church Golf Group. The first outing will be on Thursday, March 18. The tee time is 9:00am at Charwood Golf Course. We will be playing on Thursdays again this year. We will play nine times, March thru October. In addition to Charwood, we will play Linrick, Woodlands, Northwoods, and Fort Jackson. If you played in 2009 you are on the roster. For new players we will need your phone number, handicap or your last three scores. Everyone on the roster will be called about a week before each game to determine if you will be able to play.
The cost is a $15.00 annual fee plus $2.00 in addition to the golf course charge each time you play. These funds are used for prizes distributed at the October 21st outing. The play schedule, rules and costs will be available in the Welcome Center at the church. They will also be available at the first two or three games.
Participation is not limited to church members. If you have a friend who would enjoy playing with us, please invite him or her and call Sid Thomas with the name, telephone number, and handicap. Do not hesitate to participate if you are concerned about shooting a high score. We use a modified Stableford scoring system. This system levels the field for all participants and speeds the pace of play. You pick up your ball and go to the next hole after you hit your bogie shot. We have players with handicaps from 3 to 34. The high handicappers win as often as the good golfers. Everyone is welcome.
You may get on the roster by calling Sid Thomas at 782-4463, by filling out the form in the Newsletter and dropping it in the offering plate, or by bringing the form by the Welcome Center at the church. Please get your name in by February 28, 2010.

Lenten Study: The Return of the Prodigal Son
Location: Welcome Center, Lower Level, Activity Room
Lent is a time of preparation leading to Easter Sunday; it is during these 40 days that Christians concentrate on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf as he journeyed to Jerusalem, where he underwent his trial, crucifixion, and death. In entering a season of disciplined study during Lent, we can achieve a greater understanding of how Jesus' saving actions make it possible for us to have true relationship with God. What better way to voyage through this season than by studying Henri Nouwen's reflections on Rembrandt van Rijn's masterpiece The Return of the Prodigal Son? This six-week study will run from February 21 - March 28 and be led by Dr. Ellen Skidmore. To order a copy of Nouwen's book, please contact Travis by Monday, February 1.
